Metamarco Collaborative Digital Art
Metamarco began as a way to understand blockchain through its intrinsic capabilities rather than its market narrative. A public network that belongs to no one can hold a digital object that no single platform controls. Once that object can be held, transferred, sold, or jointly controlled through a wallet, digital ownership stops being an abstract claim and becomes something that can be designed around.
The project used that premise to make a collective artwork. The whole piece was permanent and on-chain, but it was composed of individual parts. Each part belonged to one person, indefinitely, unless they chose to transfer it. Owning a part was not only a certificate of provenance: it granted the right to change its colour, with that change affecting the wider composition and its adjacent pieces.
This created a small but concrete model of digital collectivity: individual ownership inside a shared object; personal agency with consequences for everyone else; and an artwork that could keep changing without losing its history or its permanence. It was a way to test how a digital object can be both singular and multiple, privately held and collectively shaped.
Metamarco was designed and built as the full interaction layer around that idea: the on-chain ownership model, the contract rules, and the website through which people could see, own, and alter the work.
