Building Gordo Labs
After a lot of thinking (years) always falling into the problem of applying my own product knowledge to create my own website, falling into the dichotomy of trying to "sell" my profile in one vertical or another. After a lot of thinking without coming up with a solution that I really liked.
I said, fuck it. My profile is my profile, with all the events and projects, and the ideas I invest in or spend time on, whether or not they are interesting to a specific audience. Even if after a day of thinking about them I get rid of them. We are a product of what we do and what we think. With its complexities and its multiplicities, and perhaps one of the most complex processes in life is to accept ourselves.
And suddenly, all the problems disappear, everything is yes, the filter is the non-filter, the filter is the organization of the information. There is no fine tuning, I just need to show it and classify it. And to navigate easily through the elements.
After playing a bit with representations, I come to some conclusions. Our life is defined by time, and our learnings and events that we show when we show our portfolio or our job cover letters are nothing more than encapsulations of that time spent in places, projects and with specific people. We organize our life around jobs, hobbies, free time, learning, leisure... But in reality it's all the same and it's all connected, as you can be thinking about work while you're watching a movie because you're much more motivated with that cool project and the movie sucks. The mind doesn't understand work or leisure, they are abstractions that we have preconfigured.
So I structured the categorization by time spent:
- Projects: more than a week (approx). Where I count not the project itself, but the process as well, which is much more interesting.
- Posts: Less than a week, ideas, writings, thoughts... the rest.
- Visuals: As I like to design, many times for no reason, other times it will become a project, but most of the time it requires a different representation as a final work.
With this the web becomes more like a diary where you simply upload everything as a documentation of your life. But classified and organized. Extensible and without filter of what you can and cannot upload, since the filter is decided by the user with his selection.
And suddenly you can "filter" only the things needed for a specific portfolio, maybe more focused on ux & ui, or maybe more focused on software development, maybe product, arts, leisure, hobbies. It's your life. Searchable.
Gotcha. Build time.
